A seat wall can frame conversation without filling the center of your patio with furniture. Start with the places people already want to sit, then decide where the wall should begin and end.
The cap, face and surrounding paving should feel related. Compare the actual samples and a comfortable seating arrangement, with room to enter and leave the gathering space.
Draw the people into the plan.
Show occupied seats, movable chairs and the routes to the house and garden. A continuous wall is not always the best answer: an opening or shorter return may leave the patio easier to use.
If a fire feature is part of the design, establish its specific requirements before positioning the seating. Discuss the supporting construction and any changes in level separately from the wall’s decorative finish.

Can a seat wall replace every patio chair?
A seat wall adds a fixed place to sit, while movable chairs offer different positions and flexibility. Lay out both with the people who will use the space in mind. Keep the entrances and walking routes clear when the seating is occupied.
How do I choose the cap and wall finish?
Compare actual samples with your paving and the house. Consider the cap’s surface, edge shape, intended seating use and care, along with the wall face. Review a suitable seated position instead of choosing dimensions from a photograph.
Can a seat wall surround a fire feature?
It can be considered as part of the same design, but the selected fire feature’s requirements govern its relationship to seating and nearby construction. Plan access into the gathering area and the position of any movable furniture at the same time.
